What does chart vacancy actually mean?
Chart vacancy means a berth or seat still empty after the railway has prepared a train's reservation chart. The chart fixes who travels and in which berth. Anything left over is a vacancy. On train 12002 we saw 38 Executive Chair Car places free this way, checked at 05:10 IST on 3 September 2026. You can book a vacancy, or ask the TTE.

Two questions, two pages
This page answers what a chart vacancy is. It does not tell you when the chart is prepared: when the reservation chart is prepared sets out the rule in force, names the letter behind it, and says plainly where the published evidence runs out.
The phrase is the railway's own
"Chart vacancy" sounds like agent slang. It is not. On 27 February 2019 the Ministry of Railways announced a facility for public viewing of train charts and vacant berths. The press release says a new option labelled "CHARTS / VACANCY" was added to the booking site's home page. It describes the point of the facility in one line: to give passengers "the information of the vacant berths available in the train after chart preparation".
So the words you typed into a search box are the words the railway uses. They describe one particular moment. Not before the chart. After it.
What a reservation chart is
A reservation chart is the passenger list for one train on one day. It says who is booked, in which coach, on which berth, and between which two stations. It is the document the coach attendant and the ticket examiner work from.
The Indian Railway Commercial Manual, Volume I, treats the chart as a physical thing that has to be put on a wall. Paragraph 626 says reservation charts "should be displayed as early as possible but not later than two hours before the due departure of the train", at the main entrance or on the departure platform. The same paragraph requires the displayed chart to "indicate full particulars of carriages and their position from the engine". That is why the chart on the platform tells you where your coach will stop.
Two more paragraphs matter for vacancies. Paragraph 627 sets up a reservation booth for waitlisted passengers near the platform, and says that fifteen minutes before departure a ticket collector should stand there and tell people which coaches and berths are free. Paragraph 628 goes further. The collector must hand the reservation office a written statement. It has to list "the number of vacant berths", the passengers "who did not turn up or who cancelled their accommodation", and "the names of the actual allottees".
Read those two together and the shape of the thing is clear. A vacancy is not an accident the railway hides. It is a number the railway counts, records and hands back to its own office.
Why berths fall vacant
Three ordinary things create vacancies.
- Cancellations after the chart. A confirmed passenger cancels late. The berth is emptied but nobody is moved up into it automatically.
- Passengers who do not turn up. Paragraph 628 names them directly.
- Part-journey occupancy. A berth booked from Delhi to Agra is empty from Agra onward. The train has a berth free even though the coach looks full.
The 2019 press release describes exactly this. It says the chart display shows berth-wise status "like occupied for full journey, occupied for part journey and vacant for full journey".
| Berth state | What it means | Is it a vacancy you can use? |
|---|---|---|
| Vacant for full journey | Nobody is booked in it from origin to destination | Yes. This is the plain case |
| Occupied for part journey | Somebody travels in it for one stretch only | Sometimes. The free stretch can be sold or allotted |
| Occupied for full journey | Somebody is booked in it end to end | No |
What a vacancy means for you
There are two routes to a vacant berth, and they are not the same.
Current booking is booking against berths still vacant after charting. A current-booking ticket is confirmed at once, with a real coach and berth number. A vacant berth is not automatically yours: you must book it, or ask the TTE for it.
The first route is a normal purchase. A Ministry of Railways release of 6 October 2020 puts it plainly. After the first chart, it says, "the available accommodation could be booked across PRS counters as well as through internet on first-come-first-serve basis till preparation of second reservation charts". Current booking after chart preparation covers the whole window in detail.
The second route runs through a railway servant. Commercial Manual paragraph 647 is strict about this. "No person other than that for whom accommodation has been reserved under the rules should occupy such accommodation except with the permission of an authorized railway servant". At an originating station that person is the reservation official on the platform, or the Station Master on duty. Elsewhere it is "the Conductor if there is one on the train or, in his absence, the Guard of the train".
Seeing a berth listed as vacant is not the same as being allowed to sit on it.
What chart vacancy does not mean
- It is not a prediction. A vacancy is a count of empty berths at a moment. It says nothing about whether your waiting-list ticket clears. Still waitlisted after the chart covers that case and the refund that usually follows it.
- It is not the same as ordinary availability. Before the chart, a free berth is simply on sale. After the chart, it is a vacancy in the sense used here. Our checker keeps the two apart, and how to read a seat availability result shows the two codes side by side.
- It is not a quota. Which queue you are in is a different subject, handled on what your waiting-list code means.
Rule history: older official pages carry older timings
Several official pages still print chart timings that have since been changed. We quote them here as history, with their dates, and nowhere else. The rule in force is on when the reservation chart is prepared, which is also worked out for any departure time by the chart preparation time table.
| Page | Date it carries | The timing it states |
|---|---|---|
| Ministry of Railways release on public chart viewing | 27 February 2019 | The first chart "is prepared four hours in advance to train departure" |
| South Eastern Railway, Current Reservation | Undated | Current reservation happens after the first chart, "which is made four hours before the schedule departure" |
| Ministry of Railways release on second charts | 6 October 2020 | Second charts "between 30 minutes to 5 minutes before scheduled/rescheduled time of departure" |
The second-chart window in the last row has not been reported as changed. The four-hour figure in the first two rows has been superseded twice.
Where our own numbers come from
We do not hold railway data. When you ask our checker for a train, it calls a commercial rail data API and shows you what came back, with the time in IST that we fetched it. The 38 Executive Chair Car places in the opening paragraph are a real reading for train 12002 from New Delhi on 3 September 2026, taken at 05:10 IST, fifty minutes before that train's 06:00 departure. The feed and its checksum are listed on data sources, and our method page sets out what a live reading does not mean.
