Train Chart Vacancy

Current booking after chart preparation

Current booking after chart preparation is the sale of berths still empty once the chart is out. It is the one honest route to a confirmed berth at that stage. Booking stays open at reservation counters and on the internet until the second chart is prepared. Our checker reports it as CURR_AVBL, followed by the number of places free.

The short version

Current booking is booking against berths still vacant after charting. A current-booking ticket is confirmed at once, with a real coach and berth number. A vacant berth is not automatically yours: you must book it, or ask the TTE for it.

If the system gave you a string rather than a number, the status decoder reads it.

That is the whole idea. What follows is the detail, and where each piece of it comes from. Where the vacancy itself comes from is covered on what chart vacancy actually means.

When the window opens and closes

The clearest official statement we found is a Ministry of Railways press release of 6 October 2020. It was issued when second charts went back to their old timing. Describing the settled practice, it says that after the first chart "the available accommodation could be booked across PRS counters as well as through internet on first-come-first-serve basis till preparation of second reservation charts".

The same release states the decision itself. The second reservation chart "shall be prepared at least 30 minutes before scheduled/rescheduled time of departure of train". It adds that "ticket booking facility, both online and on PRS ticket counters, shall be available, before preparation of second chart". The change took effect from 10 October 2020.

So charts fix both ends of the window. There is no clock reading to learn:

The opening moment moves with the chart rule. That rule has changed twice since 2025. We do not restate that rule here. It is set out, with its evidence, on when the reservation chart is prepared, and worked out for any departure time on the chart preparation time table.

One detail catches people out. Charts are prepared for every charting location, not just the train's origin. The 2019 release on chart viewing says both charts "will get updated for every charting location as the train heads towards its destination". If you board halfway down the route, your current-booking window is set by your own charting location.

What the booking site publishes about current booking

The national booking site keeps a short page of current-booking rules. We reproduce all eight, in its own numbering. They are the only published statement of the terms we could find.

Published current-booking guidelines, as they appear on the official booking site
No.Rule as published
1"Booking is allowed for all types of users (Normal & Agent)."
2"Only E-Ticket booking is allowed."
3"Only Confirmed tickets shall be booked during current booking."
4"Only senior citizen and disabled concession shall be allowed."
5"Current booking is allowed after charting within the existing booking time limit specified by Railways."
6"Boarding point change is not allowed for current booking PNR."
7"Name/age/gender change is not allowed for current booking PNR."
8"Booking in premium & Suvidha train will be allowed with the last booking fare."

Rule 3 is the one worth pausing on. During current booking there is no waiting list and no RAC. Either a confirmed berth exists for you or the sale does not happen. Rule 5 is the one that disappoints. It names no closing minute. It points instead to "the existing booking time limit specified by Railways", which is the second chart above.

Rule 4 is a real loss for some travellers. Concessions other than senior citizen and disabled are not available in this window.

Where you can do it

Two places, and they are not equal.

There is a third route that is not booking at all. Under Commercial Manual paragraph 647, only an authorised railway servant may let you occupy accommodation reserved for someone else. At an originating station that is the reservation official or the Station Master. Elsewhere it is "the Conductor if there is one on the train or, in his absence, the Guard of the train". Asking the TTE is that route. It is a request, not a purchase, and the manual gives the staff member the discretion.

What CURR_AVBL means on our checker

When our checker calls its data provider and the provider answers with a string beginning CURR_AVBL, we label the result Current booking and show the number that follows it. We never convert an unknown answer into a zero. How we fetch, cache and age these readings is set out on our method, sources and caching page.

A real example, from our own cache and not an illustration. On 3 September 2026 at 05:10 IST we asked for train 12002, New Delhi to Rani Kamlapati, Executive Chair Car, general quota, for that same day. The provider answered CURR_AVBL-0038. Train 12002 leaves New Delhi at 06:00, so the chart was long out and 38 Executive Chair Car places were free for current booking fifty minutes before departure.

How our checker treats the two "seats are free" codes
Provider stringOur labelNumber shownWhat it tells you
AVAILABLE-nnnnAvailableYes, the nnnnOrdinary booking, chart not yet prepared
CURR_AVBL-nnnnCurrent bookingYes, the nnnnChart is out; these are the vacancies

The difference is the chart. Both mean places exist. Only the second means the passenger list has already been fixed and these berths survived it. How to read a seat availability result works through the rest of the codes.

If there is no current booking

Sometimes the answer is that nothing is free. That is a real answer and we print it as one. What you should not do is board on a ticket that was dropped from the chart. The official scheme for waitlisted e-tickets is blunt. Passengers left fully waitlisted after charting "are not allowed to board the train". If detected, they "shall be treated as passenger traveling without ticket as per extant Railway Rules". Still waitlisted after the chart sets out the refund that follows, and the two exceptions to it.

Rule history: superseded timings on official pages

Two official pages still carry a four-hour first-chart figure. We quote them as history, with dates, and we do not repeat those figures as current fact anywhere else.

Superseded chart timings quoted from official pages, as history
PageDate it carriesThe timing it states
South Eastern Railway, Current ReservationUndatedThe first chart "is made four hours before the schedule departure of the train"
Ministry of Railways release on public chart viewing27 February 2019The first chart "is prepared four hours in advance to train departure"
Ministry of Railways release on second charts6 October 2020Second charts "between 30 minutes to 5 minutes before scheduled/rescheduled time of departure"

Only the last row describes something we have no evidence has changed. For the current first-chart rule, and for what is verified as against merely reported, see when the reservation chart is prepared.
